I Love Baseball, Baseball Is Fun – Rangers Series Review

I mean really, the title says it all but man is it great to have baseball back. Like many Tribe fans, I have been incredibly depressed since game 7 and when I stop to think about it, I still get sad, but a clean sweep of the Rangers to start 2017 is just what the doctor ordered. Let’s take a look at some key takeaways from this series.

Starting Pitching

Kluber looked a LOT like “Game 7 Kluber” the first few innings and it made me really sad, just wanted to give the guy a hug. Then he found his rhythm and retired 11 of his last 12 guys to allow the eventual comeback. Carrasco looked great with the small exception of the Joey Gallo moonshot (see below). Salazar turned in a great start and surprisingly it was his defense that let him down allowing 3 runs to score in the 5th. Overall, you can’t argue with 3 wins and our starters weren’t flawless, but they buckled down in big spots, kept us in a position to win each game and let the offense take care of the rest.

Not to mention, this Texas team can hit, they don’t have the complete lineup that the Indians do, but they have a lot of power and displayed that with 11 of their 14 runs coming on HR’s or extra base hits and the other 3 coming as a result of an error. If you leave the ball up in the zone, it’s going very very far. Example A, Joey Gallo hit this ball into next week.

Offense

Not gonna spend too much time here because the offense looked great. Quality at bats, timely hits, long balls and all around fun. Everyone got in on the party, of the 12 indians who got ABs, 10 got hits, 10 scored at least 1 run, 8 got multiple hits, and a total of 5 HRs were launched. Newcomer Edwin the Indian got started just the right way with a bomb in the first game to tie things up and it made me really happy.

Hey man, what did you think of the indians offense this week?

Defense

Highlighted by a great grab by Brandon Guyer the Indians played solid defense the past three days. Obviously, the error on Lindor (which I actually thought should’ve been charged to Edwin) was costly and we are lucky to have come back to win that game. That said, Yan Gomes threw out the first attempted base stealer of the year and it was a good three days with the exception of about 10 baffling seconds in that 5th inning of game 3.

Bullpen

The bullpen picked up basically exactly where we left off last year, with the exception of Boone Logan who is a huge addition to the crew. Cody Allen did Cody Allen things picking up 2 saves and making one of them very interesting. Core guys Miller, Shaw, and Otero looked strong. Yes, Otero gave up the bomb, but again this Texas team can thump.

Series Feather (first ever!)

Yandy Diaz. 3 hits in his first series in the bigs is great, but what impressed me more were his outs. He hit the on the nose almost all series just hit happened to hit them right at people. Excited to see more of him this year, the first prestigious feather award goes to you, Yandy!

Looking Ahead

After leaving Arizona for Texas, the Tribe head back to the desert this weekend to face off with the D-Bags D-Backs. Arizona struggled in 2016 winning only 69 games (nice) but have started 2017 off with a bang putting up 18 runs and taking 2 of 3 in their series with the Giants. Shelby Miller, Zach Grienke and Patrick Corbin oppose us. Miller is looking to get back on track from a down 2016 campaign, Grienke’s career to me is just one of the oddest things in baseball and Corbin is a below average lefty looking to improve in his sophomore season. I don’t expect us to roll, but I ain’t scared.

P.S. Yo Jonathan Lucroy, is this yo girl?
